The word personality itself stems from the Latin word persona, which referred to a theatrical mask work by performers in order to either project different roles or disguise their identities.
Definition of personality: personality is made up of the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that make a person unique.Components of personality: There are 3 basic components of personality.
Identity (id): The id is the original system of personality.it is the matrix within which the ego and super ego become differentiated.it is the reservoir of psychic energy. Id is the “true psychic reality” because it represents the inner world of subjective experiences and has no knowledge about objective reality.
The id follows the pleasure principle and its goal is the immediate gratification of the organism’s needs.the content of the id is wholly unconscious.
Ego: The ego is acquired and functions as a reality principles.the content of the ego can exist at all three levels of awareness ;however, very little of the ego’s content is unconscious.the ego operates logically and serves to arbitrate between the desires of the id and the prohibitions of the superego.
The basic distinctions between the id and the ego is that the id knows the only subjective reality of the mind whereas the ego distinguishes between things in the mind and things in the external world.
The ego is said to be the executive of the personality.the ego is the organized portion of the id.all power of the ego is derived from id.it never becomes independent of the id.
Super ego: It is the internal representative of the traditional values and ideals of society as interpreted to the child by its parents.the superego is the moral arm of personality.its main concern is to decide whether something is right or wrong.it acts an accordance with the moral standards of society.
The superego is like the id irrational, and like the ego to exercise the control over the instincts.
Overview: The personality normally functions as a whole rather than as three separate segments.in a very general way,the id may be thought of as the biological component of personality, the ego as the psychological components; and the superego as the social components.
